History & Origins

The Dunmer, commonly known as Dark Elves, are the ash-skinned, red-eyed elven people of Morrowind. Originally known as the Chimer ('Changed Ones'), they were Aldmeri dissidents who followed the prophet Veloth away from the Summerset Isles to settle in the land that would become Morrowind.

The Chimer's transformation into Dunmer occurred when the god Azura cursed them for the Tribunal's betrayal — the three mortals Vivec, Almalexia, and Sotha Sil who used the Heart of Lorkhan to become living gods. Their golden skin turned ashen gray and their eyes became red, marking them as the 'Changed Folk.'
